X-Class - teacher interface

X-Class (Time-Conflict Course) Policy

For lecture-based courses, students may apply to enroll in another conflicting course if complete asynchronous teaching videos are provided. In such cases, the course may be designated as an 'X-Class'. This policy has been in place since autumn 2022.

🚩 Avoid Confusion: Distance-Learning Courses vs. X-Class Courses

Distance-Learning Courses (Requires Application & Three-Level Review)

  • If more than 50% of the course hours are delivered remotely (synchronous or asynchronous), it is considered a distance-learning course.
  • The course must be submitted to the school’s three-level curriculum committees for approval before it can be offered.

X-Class Courses (No Three-Level Review Required)

  • The course is primarily conducted in-person.
  • To accommodate students with schedule conflicts, instructors must provide a complete asynchronous teaching video to ensure students’ learning rights.
  • Even if the video is available to the entire class, the course is not considered a distance-learning course.

✅ Reminder for Instructors

  • Providing a video does not equal a distance-learning course.
  • Only courses where more than half of the class hours are delivered remotely need to go through the three-level review.
  • X-Class is a supplementary teaching arrangement, with in-person instruction as the core.
  • Do not mark a course as X-Class solely based on “no attendance requirement” or “allowing students to learn independently”; a complete asynchronous teaching video is required to meet the X-Class standards.
  • Distance-Learning Courses Can Also Be Designated as X-Class: Even if a course qualifies as a distance-learning course (more than 50% of the course hours delivered remotely), it can still be designated as X-Class with the instructor’s approval, allowing students to take the course despite schedule conflicts.

📋 [Faculty Members] Semester-Based Administrative Workflow

Phase 1: Course Scheduling & System Setup Preparation

Evaluate course suitability and ensure that complete lecture videos can be provided for the entire semester. Please download and complete the application forms: 📄 Download X-Class Course Designation Application Form (Instructor Version)

⚠️ Note on Course Syllabus: If there are any in-person exams or face-to-face evaluations, instructors must specify them in the course syllabus for the current semester in advance.

Phase 2: Add/Drop Period Approval Mechanism (Start of Semester)

When students wish to apply for taking conflicting courses, they will bring a physical paper [X-Class Application Form] to the instructor for a signature.

  • Approval Principle: The instructor's signature only represents "agreement to let the student take the conflicting course through this specific channel." This signature does not constitute approval for over-tallying/extra enrollment into the course (enrollment cap adjustments must still follow standard course selection procedures).

Phase 3: Flexible Adjustments After the Add/Drop Deadline

After the university's add/drop deadline, if no students have applied for conflicting courses, or if the conflict no longer exists, instructors may decide at their own discretion whether to continue adjusting or to stop providing the asynchronous online learning resources.

🎁 X-Class Launch Support & Reward Pilot Program

To encourage active faculty participation in offering X-Class courses, the university provides a related pilot subsidy program. For program details and application specifics, please feel free to contact:

  • Contact: Ms. Wang, General Academic Affairs Section, Office of Academic Affairs
  • Campus Extension: #35077

Notes

Students enrolled in X-Class courses will not be specially marked on the attendance list.
