How courses are identified
The course code at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) consists of the following elements:
Academic year:
The first three digits of the course code indicate the academic year in which the course is offered. For example, a course code starting with 110 indicates the academic year 2021-2022.
Semester:
The fourth and fifth digits of the course code indicate the term in which the course is offered. For example, a course code ending with 01 indicates the first term (fall semester), and a code ending with 02 indicates the second term (spring semester).
Department:
The next four letters of the course code indicate the department offering the course. For example, PHYS stands for the Department of Physics.
Course level:
The last four digits of the course code indicate the level of the course. The first digit represents the year of study (1 for the first year, 2 for the second year, etc.), and the remaining three digits identify the course. For example, a course code ending in 1001 indicates a first-year course. Postgraduate courses are identified by course codes beginning with 5 (e.g., 5001).
The current course numbering system follows specific guidelines:
- 1XXX: courses suitable for first year undergraduates
- 2XXX: courses suitable for second year undergraduates
- 3XXX: Courses suitable for third year students
- 4XXX: Courses suitable for fourth year students
- 5XXX、6XXX: Courses suitable for postgraduate students studying for a Master's or Ph.D. degree.
- 7XXX、8XXX、9XXX: Courses specifically designed for postgraduate students studying for a Ph.D. degree.
