Differences between Dropping and withdrawing from a Course

Dropping a Course

  • When you drop a course, it does not appear on your transcript.
  • Dropping a course has no impact on your GPA.
  • Dropping a course is often a preferable option, especially if you do it before a certain deadline.
  • Dropping a course can allow you to enroll in another course without any negative academic consequences.

Withdrawing from a Course:

  • Withdrawing from a course results in a 'W' grade on your transcript.
  • The 'W' grade indicates that you withdrew from the course after a specific withdrawal deadline.
  • The 'W' grade itself typically does not affect your GPA.
  • Withdrawing from a course might be a choice when the drop deadline has passed, but you still need to discontinue the course.

Remember to check both the drop and withdrawal deadlines for your courses, and consider your academic goals and consequences before making a decision.
